The Programme starts from a detailed analysis of mobility
and traffic on Pantelleria Island (Sicily, Italy) in the
critical period of summer, when a very large number of
tourists is present on the island. The proposals that have
been worked out, are aimed at improving mobility and its
environmental compatibility, allowing at the same time a
short realisation period and taking into account the
various environmental, orographic and infrastructural
conditions. At this purpose, the work has been divided
into two stages: a first, short-term phase, and a second,
medium-term one.
Short-term:
- To control the summer emergency on Pantelleria, limiting
the access to private vehicles.
- To diminish the use of private cars adopting a ticket
system for accessing the major touristic areas on the
island and for paying car parks.
- To offer a first alternative to the use of privat cars,
through the qualification and the improvement of the
public transport system, in particular in the summer.
- To improve road network and traffic regulations, in
order to facilitate public transport.
- To qualify the offer of cars for hire on the island,
improving the fleet of cars and the distribution of
renting places, and also renting numerous electrical
motorcycles.
Medium-term:
- Adoption of an entrance ticket for vehicles of
non-residents.
- Intensify, in cooperation with the car rentals and the
touristic operators of the island (hotelkeepers, etc.),
specific and personalized services of collective transport
directly managed by car rentals.
