Vanuatu, like all the other small island developing states
of the world, is concerned about global warming and the
drastic effects of climate change on our marine life and
our weather conditions.
We have fought for a rapid reduction of carbon dioxide
emissions since we first learned of this dire
environmental problem in 1990. Now, Vanuatu has begun a
bold new initiative and if you are in the business of
renewable energy, or if you are involved with an
environmental organization, this initiative could be very
important for you.
Just suppose that all the industrial nations in the world
pooled their scientific, technological, financial and
educational resources to achieve - somewhere on Earth - a
society that derives 100% of its energy needs from
renewable resources A society that does not have to skimp
on energy use for normal household, industrial and
transport needs.
Now just imagine what this would mean for our world. Think
how much hatred, stress, fighting and cost we could avoid
if one nation were not dependent on another for their
energy or fuel needs.
Now think about pollution of our seas and waterways with
oil, and our skies with carbon dioxide and smog from
factories and vehicles. What would our world save if our
energy needs were met without ANY pollution at all?
Picture our weather stabilizing again, the seas regaining
their vitality, children in cities breathing clean air and
looking out over a cityscape and seeing forever clear as
day.
An impossible dream? Not at all. When humanity puts its
collective talents together to solve a technological or
scientific problem it always succeeds. And this time,
virtually every component of this brave new energy world
is available off the shelf.
Vanuatu and the other small island developing states of
the world propose that the nations of the world unite to
achieve this goal, and use the small island developing
states as the place to set up 100% energy economies. A
global research and development project that will be a
win-win situation for all. We have named this project
Operation ICE PAC, standing for Integrated Clean Energy
for Peace And Climate. The image the name engenders is one
of relief for an overheated world.
