Lands trapped between sea and sky and often considered paradises on Earth, islands are now facing a new revolution. The consolidation of energy options related with the use of renewable energy sources, technological maturity in the exploitation of these sources, and continuous innovation, place islands before a panorama that was unthinkable only a few years ago.

More than twenty years of experiences made on islands aimed at renewable energy source integration, resulted in a wide range of advanced projects and initiatives which show that renewables are not just an option for islands, but their resource of future. Under this premise, better market conditions and legal frameworks should be promoted to allow overcoming those barriers that still hinder islands’ energy-sustainable development.

Most of the islands in the world are highly dependent from importation of fossil fuel for energy and, in many cases, also water production (sea water desalination). In addition to that, tourism generally is a very important economic source of income on islands. Therefore island societies are destined to consider renewable energy sources as the basis of all their sustainable development strategies either because of their economic specialisation and their limited resource availability.

The objective of the Renewable Energy Islands Conference is to make a leap forward in island strategy, comparing already consolidated experiences with the state of the art available technology and the new arising needs, to strengthen RET market in island territories as a basic strategic line of European islands’ demand.
