The island of Pantelleria is located in the middle of the
Sicily Channel: this position offers a significant
renewable energy potential to supply local and tourist
population with clean energy. The island is not connected
to the electric grid on the mainland, and electricity is
locally produced by means of diesel engines. As far as
regard renwables, wind, solar and geothermal resources are
abundant: thus, Pantelleria could become a unique example
for the implementation of a full sustainable community
project. During the past years, the awareness of local
administration and population have constantly increased,
determining the right conditions for the elaboration of a
strategy on the wide exploitation of renewables at
community level.
THE STRATEGY
On the basis of the analysis of resources and
consumptions, a very ambitious goal has been set: to
become a full renewable community in the medium-long term.
This result will be achieved by means of a medium-long
term co-ordinated strategy, which design the path towards
sustainability and define a group of intermediate targets
to be met.
OBJECTIVES
The main objectives set by the local administration are
related to all the different types of renewable energies
present on the island. These goals are divided into short
and medium term objectives.
Short-term PV - Target: to install a serie of PV plants on
a group of buildings to be constructed in the new
industrial area. These PV plants will be located in a
suitable position to guarantee a high-visibility and
dissemination effect. This action will also contribute to
improve the image of the island towards the tourists.
Energy goal: to design, install and operate 5 PV plants,
20 kWp each, for a total capacity of 100 kWp.
Wind energy - Target: to supply a significant amount of
energy, so to reduce the energy bill of the local
Municipality (108.000 €/y for water pumping only) and to
have a direct impact on the total electricity production
in Pantelleria.
Energy goal: to install a 660 kW wind generator, that will
supply at least 1.650.000 kWh/y.
Rational Use of Energy - Target: To promote the rational
use of energy and reduce waste of energy. Both residential
and tourist populations will be addressed by a
specifically designed dissemination and information
campaign.
Energy goal: to contribute to reduce the grid-overloads,
black-out, etc. and, as a consequence, to reduce the
diesel oil consumption for electricity production.
Solar thermal - Target: to support ~ 400 resident families
and - in case - some tourist resorts with a 40 % grant to
the investment needed to install a solar thermal system.
It is important to remark that today sanitary hot water is
mainly produced by means of electric boilers.
Energy goal: to satisfy ~ 15 % of total electricity demand
for sanitary hot water production, corresponding to
approximately 20 % of residential family demand.
Medium term Geothermal energy - Target: To supply a
base-load and large amount of renewable energy.
Energy goal: to produce about 17.500.000 kWh/y by means of
a 2,500 kW plant.
