Environmental Aspects

Akamas Peninsula

Today, 96% of all energy consumed in Cyprus is generated from imported fossil fuels, using up to 62% of the country’s export revenues. Consequently, CO2 emissions per capita are 9 tonnes, one of the highest rates world-wide. Future energy plans for Cyprus are based on the construction of the Vasilikos power station, which will increase today’s fossil fuel power generation with 817 MW. This is in clear contradiction to the government’s commitment to the United Nation’s Kyoto Protocol to cut down its CO2 emissions and work towards a sustainable energy sector.
